MODULAR CABINETS:
Modular Cabinets are pre-made/"manufactured". The are sold as a single cabinet. Most modular cabinet
manufactures use the same system. The cabinets and parts are based on 3" increments. The cabinet box materials
are made with 3/8" or 5/8" melamine, depending on the manufacturer and the grade of the cabinet
(economy/premium). All face frames are 1 5/8" wide and 3/4" thick.
In my opinion, most modular cabinets are going to last, with normal wear and tear, 7 years. At this point, you might
consider replacing parts or even doors if the color or style is still available by the manufacturer. Colors and finishes
are typically limited.
CUSTOM CABINETS
Custom Cabinets, simply put, are made-to-fit. Typically, the box material of the cabinets is 3/4" versus 5/8".
Melamine has become standard for the interior boxes and an upgrade would be furniture grade plywood.
In my opinion, you will find that the custom cabinets, with normal wear and tear, will generally last longer than the
average set of modular cabinets. In addition to custom cabinets, the stain or finish of the cabinets will be determined
by the customer. There is a greater selection of colors and finishers.
